Weekend Roundup

I spoke with a high school student last weekend. When I asked how her Saturday was going, she said it was going well and then added, “Although Saturday feels a lot like Thursday.”

So true.

I thought I would share a few things I have come across or rediscovered this week as we roll through the weekend.

1. I enjoyed this Outside Podcast about swimming. A few interesting stories and reflections on why we go to the water. And it adds to my list of books I want to read.

2. A pair of quotes to ponder:

“Change is inevitable. Change for the better is a full-time job.”—Adlai Stevenson

     and…

Nelson Mandela when asked how he survived all those years in prison: “I didn’t survive, I prepared.”

3. Regarding the Mandela quote, I have to check in with myself somewhat regularly right now. Am I making it through the days by simply passing time? Or am I trying to make the most of each day because this is what we have in front of us?

Maybe that clicks with some of your own experiences. This strange time we are living in puts a sharper point on the truth that we really only ever have the day or moment in front of us in which to live.

Heather and I are working from home, homeschooling kids, and looking ahead—as we all are—toward the uncertainty that remains all we see on the horizon. It can seem stifling. Or, at the very least, repetitive.

Then I take my kids outside and we explore the back yard. We climb things and my daughter digs in the dirt. I reach out to people I care about and I make time to write. And exercise. And sit in my cold tub.

And this makes a day.

All of this is to say I hope you are finding ways to make satisfying days for yourselves along the way.

Have a great weekend!
